Lutheran Homes of Michigan President David Gehm talks about Swine Flu |
Dear Lutheran Homes of Michigan residents, families, caregivers and workers:
There is growing concern about swine flu, and how it is spreading globally. We wanted to share some facts with you, including Centers for Disease Control information, and inform you on what Lutheran Homes of Michigan is doing.
First of all, swine flu symptoms are much like regular flu symptoms. And many of the same "flu" rules apply — wash your hands, practice good hygiene and be alert for symptoms. If you have symptoms, see your doctor or alert your caregiver immediately, and please limit your contact within our facilities and in the public.
The difference with swine flu is the speed with which it is capable of spreading, and its intensity. Past influenza pandemics have been very deadly. That's why the concern is there, nationally and globally. (A pandemic is an epidemic across a large region or the globe.)
We say this not to scare you or panic you, but to inform you. Information is power, and we are seeking to empower you so you can act accordingly.
At Lutheran Homes of Michigan campuses and ministry sites, we have dealt with common infectious outbreaks before, so we are better prepared than most to deal with swine flu. As part of the larger health-care community, our staff members have had recent high-level training specifically on potential pandemics and other public health emergencies.
To date, we have had no reported cases within Lutheran Homes of Michigan.
Here is a detailed list of questions and answers from the Center for Disease Control. Please review it carefully. Be aware there are many more official sources of information online, at the CDC and elsewhere.
If you have specific questions regarding Lutheran Homes of Michigan and swine flu, please talk to a nursing supervisor or campus official.
We pray that this information helps ease your mind, and helps you become more aware of the situation, and our response to it.
In His Service, David M. Gehm President & CEO Lutheran Homes of Michigan
